In 1974, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was founded by Hispanic engineer Rodrigo T. (Rod) Garcia, the first president of the organization. Initially concentrated on efforts in Southern California, the organization now has grown to 13,000+ members, 10,000+ of those being student members in all of the United States and its territories. Over 200 student chapters are currently active.

As a leading university in the field of engineering, the University of Missouri, Columbia (Mizzou) is one of these growing chapters located in Region VI. We strive to uphold the mission, vision, and values of SHPE, united in our heritage and studies.

SHPE's mission is to change lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development.
